Introduction

In response to ongoing drought conditions and the need for sustainable water management, Missouri City, TX, has implemented new water restrictions for 2024. These measures are designed to ensure that our community uses water responsibly and conserves this precious resource for future generations.

Overview of Restrictions

Effective January 1, 2024, the following water use restrictions will be in place:

Outdoor Watering

  • Limited Irrigation Days: Residents with even-numbered addresses can water their lawns and gardens on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Odd-numbered addresses can water on Thursdays and Sundays.
  • Watering Times: Outdoor watering is only permitted between 6 AM – 10 AM and 8 PM – 12 AM. This helps minimize water loss due to evaporation.
  • Hand Watering: Hand watering with a hose equipped with a shut-off nozzle is allowed any day but only during the specified times.

Car Washing

  • Home Car Washing: Allowed only on designated watering days for your address and must use a hose with a shut-off nozzle.
  • Commercial Car Washes: Encouraged to use water-efficient technology and recycling systems.

Pools and Spas

  • Filling: Filling new swimming pools or refilling existing ones to replace evaporated water is allowed only on designated watering days for your address.
  • Covers: Pool covers are recommended to reduce evaporation when the pool is not in use.

Other Outdoor Uses

  • Hosing Down Driveways and Sidewalks: Prohibited except for health and safety reasons.
  • Fountains and Ponds: Should use recirculated water.

Exceptions

The following uses are exempt from the restrictions:

  • Watering of new lawns and landscaping for the first 30 days after installation.
  • Use of water for firefighting, health, and safety purposes.
  • Commercial nurseries and growers may operate under normal irrigation schedules.

Enforcement

Failure to comply with these restrictions may result in fines. The city will conduct regular inspections to ensure adherence to the guidelines.

Tips for Water Conservation

  • Install Smart Irrigation Systems: These systems adjust watering based on weather conditions and soil moisture levels.
  • Use Mulch: Mulching around plants and gardens helps retain soil moisture.
  • Check for Leaks: Regularly inspect your plumbing and irrigation systems for leaks and fix them promptly.
  • Plant Native Landscaping: Native plants require less water and are more drought-resistant.

By following these water restrictions, you help ensure that our community can maintain a reliable water supply. Let’s work together to make Missouri City a model of sustainability and responsible water use.
